Filtering Policy
Those submitting filter rules accept and agree to what is described here.
Hufilter complements EasyList and AdGuard Base List by filtering Hungarian-language content. Hufilter's rules are fundamentally compiled subjectively, based on our own judgment. The list's goal is not to filter everything at all costs; we edit it in the spirit of the "live and let live" principle.
Filtering is not limited exclusively to ads; it can also modify other content elements.
What We Filter
- Ads, video advertisements, attempts to re-insert ads
- Trackers / analytics scripts, other privacy-concerning elements
- Annoying elements (e.g., cookie notices, floating recommendations, aggressive pop-ups / pop-unders, etc.)
- Elements / sites posing serious security risks (e.g., phishing sites, malware-distributing sites, etc.)
- Elements requesting ad blocker deactivation (however, if these are not annoying and don't hinder site usage, we don't filter them)
- "Ad leftovers" (if an ad is blocked by e.g., EasyList, but the ad space remains empty or an "Advertisement" label remains, we hide it)
- Context menu blockers (if a site blocks the right-click menu)
- Self-promotions are filtered only if they are aggressive / intrusive / annoying (e.g., "support us" / "donate" elements, or advertising their own services)
- "Breakage" (if site content breaks due to a filter)
What constitutes an element as "annoying" / "aggressive" / "intrusive" is subjective, but we generally decide based on the following criteria:
- If it blocks scrolling or site usage
- Blocks content viewing or covers too much of it
- The element appears too frequently
- The element cannot be easily skipped / ignored
- Automatically plays sound / video
What We Don't Filter
- Age restriction warnings (e.g., if a site displays any warning that content is 18+)
- Paywalls (blocking access to paid content)
- Sites requiring login / invitation. The reason is simple: there's no quick and easy way to verify submitted rules. Exceptions may be made for particularly popular sites if registration is possible without an invitation. We don't filter invitation-only sites at all.
- International social media sites, e.g., YouTube, Twitter, Facebook (including their buttons and widgets on other external sites). If you want to filter these, you can subscribe to multiple lists.
Other
The hufilter maintenance team reserves the right to accept or reject any submission or request, even without justification. The filtering policy is not set in stone but rather general guidance on the main underlying principles - in extreme cases, a filter rule may be included that cannot be justified by the policy or contradicts it. This may sound harsh, but it's important that everyone clearly understands the hufilter maintenance team's position on this matter to prevent potential future misunderstandings.
When writing rules, we strive to make them as specific as possible and not cause side effects. However, it may happen that a rule doesn't work perfectly or causes side effects. In such cases, please report the error to the hufilter maintenance team.
Hufilter's goal is not to destroy or make impossible the operation of any site.
The editors and contributors are law-abiding citizens who carry out their work with the greatest care to ensure it doesn't violate any applicable laws or regulations, and are open to peaceful dispute resolution on such matters. Any legal concerns can be reported through the maintenance contact points or on GitHub, with precise specification of the alleged legal violation (i.e., specifically stating which activity, in what manner, is believed to violate which part of which law or regulation). All such reports will be investigated and published, and in case of unlawful conduct, the maintainers are fully committed to restoring the lawful situation and behavior as quickly and completely as possible.
